Understanding The Fundamentals of Plumbing

July 30, 2021 by Annie

Plumbing leaks result in the waste of approximately 1 trillion gallons annually which amounts to the size of 40million swimming pools. There are many professional plumbers, if a homeowner needs their services they can contact a plumber Phoenix, Az. Homeowners must understand the basics of their plumbing to quickly identify any problems.

Plumbing 101

Homeowners must know two important parts of their plumbing system, the water supply system and the drain-water vent system. They must also understand how to identify leaks and when to call a professional.

Drain Water Vent Systems

These are systems such as sinks, faucets, washing machines which are called bridge fixtures by plumbers because they are the points at which two systems meet. The main pipe and the home system.

Any point in your home where you can access and use water is defined as a fixture. The clean water is designed to enter the fixture and wastewater is designed to leave the fixture. This system heavily relies on gravity to remove the home’s waste water. It has three components, the drain pipes, drain traps and drain vents.

The drain traps are u-shaped pipes that prevent backflow and have the ability to consistently hold water due to their curved shape. These connect the home to the sewer line and stop the sewer gases from affecting the house. They are designed to allow grease, hair and other debris which prevents blockages.

Fixing Water Vent Systems

These systems tend to be affected by clogging. This happens when water drains slowly. To unclog the pipes, a mixture of baking powder, hot water and vinegar usually do the trick. Home owners must take time to ensure the clean out plugs are cleaned and call a professional plumber in Phoenix Az if necessary.

Understanding the Water Supply System

It’s important to first understand the source of the home’s water. In most cases, the water comes from the city water supply and wells through pipes that are connected to the home. This system is pressure dependent as the water enters the home through the connected main pipes that run parallel to the home along the street. It’s best to first understand the origin of the problem and call a professional if the problem requires fiddling with the main pipe.

Most people whose homes don’t have water pipes get the water from wells. The water is pumped at high pressure into the home from the tanks, any problems in pressure that result in pressure reductions inhibit the water from reaching parts of the home that are furthest away from the well. The first sign of low pressure in a home is usually the showers and water faucets in the home. It is important for homeowners to first investigate possible causes of this low pressure which can vary from leaks to internal pipe blockages. These are easy to handle for most homeowners, with leaks usually caused by a loose connection. The homeowner should investigate whether the connection is loose and tighten it according to manufacturer’s specifications.

Maintaining the Systems

DMV systems are best maintained by frequently emptying the clean out plugs. When they are leaking they usually cause mold infestations, damp ceilings and stinky rooms which are signs plumbers should look for.

Frequent maintenance of any system is paramount to it’s longevity and working condition. Most pipes in water systems are correctly installed to be leak proof and require very little maintenance in this area expect frequent inspection to make sure all the parts are in good working order.

Now that I have a bit more time - since my kids don't want to hang out with me (teenagers), I have taken up blogging.
