Moving home can be a real torment, especially if you lack experience doing it. A little organisation and anticipation is the key to success.
How to organise a move
- 3 months before
If you rent a flat and you want to move, the first thing you should do is terminate the rental contract. It is important to know that this must be done at least one month before, communicating this to the owner, as usually stipulated by law.
If you want to hire a company specialised in removals, it is time to establish the budget based on the volume of things you want to move. They can present you with several options: for example, one company in the Cheltenham area offers everything from a full-service multi-vehicle moving option, the most expensive, to a budget option consisting of hiring a man with a van in Cheltenham who will do the lifting, loading, and unloading for you.
There is also an intermediate option, in which you are the one in charge of dismantling the furniture and packing the objects for the move so that the transporter only takes care of loading the boxes and taking them to the new house.
- 2 months before
You can start by separating what you want to move, what you want to give away, or what you want to throw away. Cardboard boxes can be picked up from supermarkets, for example. Then you can start packing what you will not need before starting the move, indicating with a marker the contents of each box, and where it will go next.
- 1 month before
One month before the move, it is time to contact the telephone and internet company that provide your services. Simply request a change or transfer of address so that you can use the same phone number at the new address, and you can sign up for the new internet connection.
During this month, think about consuming the food you have stored in the freezer to avoid wasting it or to avoid it spoiling during the move.
The hiring of the movers and van(s) should also be finalised, so that on the day of the move you are not left stranded. Fifteen days before, you should arrange the transfer of utilities such as electricity, water, gas, etc., so that when you get to the new address, all these services are working. Normally, this can be done over the phone or online. You must also inform the bank of the change of your address.
In addition to following these tips, you should also get the necessary things for your new house, including any items you would need for any decor ideas, so you can settle into your new home comfortably and avoid having to run out looking for basic items.
