How to Teach Your Child to Ride a Bike

September 19, 2022 by Annie

Every child has to learn at some point how to ride a bike, whether they want to or not. Most adults find pedaling forward to be a struggle and can forget how tough it was to learn — adults don’t have much patience when it comes to learning from scratch.

Kids often struggle to gain balance and coordination to keep their bikes upright. Teaching your child how to ride a bike is easier than you might think and doesn’t require much patience on your end!

If you are looking for tips on how to teach your child to ride a bike, read on!

Get the Right Bike

Before anything else, you need to get the right bike.

To determine the right size bike, you need to measure the inseam of your child’s leg. The inseam is the distance from the crotch to the ground.

You can find bike size charts online that will give you a good starting point. Once you have the right size bike, you need to adjust the seat and handlebars to fit your child. The seat should be level with the ground and the handlebars should be at a comfortable height.

Choose the Right Location

A flat, smooth surface without any obstacles is best. A sidewalk, driveway, or cul-de-sac are all good options.

Avoid busy streets with cars and pedestrians. Once you have found the perfect spot, be sure to go over the safety rules with your child such as wearing a helmet, looking both ways before crossing, and using hand signals. Start with teaching them how to pedal and steer.

Fix Body Position

You want your child to be in a comfortable, upright position with their shoulders over their hips and their hands near the handlebars. Their knees should be bent and their feet should be able to reach the pedals.

If your child is too low on the bike, they will be more likely to tip over. If they are too high, it will be more difficult to pedal. You may need to adjust the seat and handlebars to get the perfect fit.

Practice Balance

The easiest way to teach your child to ride a bike with balance is to have them practice on a regular bicycle without pedals first. A balance bike for 2 year old is the perfect way to start them out. They will be able to sit on the bike and practice balancing without having to worry about pedaling.

Once they have mastered keeping their balance and steering, you can add the pedals back in.

Show Encouragement

Try to make it a positive and fun experience for them. Start by encouraging them and letting them know how proud you are of their efforts.

As they start to ride more, you can reward their progress with small treats or privileges. If they fall, try to remain positive and help them get back on the bike. With a little patience and perseverance, your child will be riding a bike in no time.

Teach Your Child How to Ride a Bike the Proper Way

Riding a bike is one of the most simple and enjoyable childhood activities. It is a great way for kids to get some exercise and fresh air.

Riding is also a good opportunity for them to explore their surroundings. There are many health benefits to it, so it is important to teach your child how to ride a bike.

Hi! I'm Annie and I have 3 kids (all in their teens - yikes!). My mommy blog isn't all about lunches and DIY - it's also about humour. Like how my kids make fun of my texts as if I don't know how to use emojis (I DO!). Now that I have a bit more time - since my kids don't want to hang out with me (teenagers), I have taken up blogging.
