Before Taking Your Car to the Shop When it Sounds Weird… Know This!

December 8, 2023 by Annie

Have you ever been cruising down the road and suddenly your car makes an unexpected noise like a squeak, rattle, or thud? When you hear strange sounds, you might get nervous that some kind of automobile monster is taking over, but rest assured a repair shop may not be necessary.

To determine if your vehicle requires servicing, you must distinguish what sounds “normal” versus weird noises that require professional help. Also, proper maintenance can prevent issues in the future. Let’s take a look at tips that will help you have the smoothest, safest, and virtually most silent ride ever!

When to DIY Versus When to Visit the Mechanic

The great news here is that some noises are harmless and can be fixed with a simple DIY method. If you are feeling on the fence about what to do, here are a few ways to determine how you should move forward.

A good rule of thumb is that if you hear something minor and your ride is running smoothly, try identifying the sound’s source. Sometimes, it could be a loose item in your trunk or under the seats, which would only mean looking for it as a possible solution.

On the other hand, if the noise is accompanied by specific symptoms, there is a good chance your ride needs a tune-up. For example, if you encounter atypical performance or if there is a strange smell, go to the mechanic (especially if the clamor is accompanied by warning lights on your dashboard). When you take your automobile in sooner rather than later, you avoid significant issues and costly repairs down the line.

Identifying Common Noises That Say “Repair Me!”

Your vehicle can make all sorts of rackets, and each may indicate a different issue. As you now know, when the sounds come with other red flags like sticky steering or gears, objects that fall off your car, uncontrollable swerving – and more additional issues – drive carefully to your nearest auto clinic.

One example is squealing brakes and difficulty slowing down or stopping. If they make a high-pitched screech, it’s often a sign that your brake pads are wearing thin. When you hear this, make sure you get them checked out to ensure they are working properly and help you stay safe.

Another unsettling alert is a rattling under your hood with smoke, which could be due to loose or damaged components underneath it.

If you hear clicking while turning, it could indicate problems with your constant velocity (CV) joints. You want to pay attention to this – ignoring it might lead to a total breakdown (mechanically and probably even emotionally).

Freaking out amidst a collection of odd noises that need fixing right now? It’s important to find out if you’re protected by your insurance plan, so work with a company that ensures you are taken care of during these tough times. When you decide to switch to better coverage, look into Freeway car insurance. They are reputable and offer a variety of plans, even if you don’t have a perfect driving record. Visit their website or call them to learn more.

Regular Maintenance for a Quieter Ride

One of the best ways you can prevent any of these noise issues in the first place is by scheduling regular maintenance. At every appointment, make sure you get your oil changed, brakes inspected, and tires rotated. Doing this regularly keeps you driving safely and saves you money in the long-term.

Additionally, stay attentive to how your vehicle sounds consistently. If something seems off, it’s better to address it promptly. Best case scenario: it’s a false alarm. However, if there is something that needs attention, it can prevent minor issues from turning into major problems.

Communicate with Your Car!

Your car communicates with you through various sounds, and it’s important to understand these signals to stay safe and prevent costly repairs. There are ways to determine when it’s time to have it looked at by a professional, including knowing common noises it makes, the circumstances that indicate you need to take your vehicle into the shop, and scheduling regular maintenance. Now that you know what to do when you hear something odd, you can fully relax and enjoy the ride. Safe travels!

About Me

Hi! I'm Annie and I have 3 kids (all in their teens - yikes!). My mommy blog isn't all about lunches and DIY - it's also about humour. Like how my kids make fun of my texts as if I don't know how to use emojis (I DO!). Now that I have a bit more time - since my kids don't want to hang out with me (teenagers), I have taken up blogging.
