A Beginner’s Guide to Creating an Accessibility Overlay for Your Website

April 27, 2022 by Annie

Making your website accessible to everyone can seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. In this blog post, we will walk you through the steps of creating an accessibility overlay for your website. An accessibility overlay is a tool that helps people with disabilities access your website’s content. It is a simple way to make your website more user-friendly for everyone.

What is an accessibility overlay and why does your site need it?

An accessibility overlay is a tool that helps people with disabilities access your website’s content. It is a simple way to make your website more user-friendly for everyone.

There are many reasons why you might need an accessibility overlay for your website. Here are some of the most prevalent:

Lots of text

Having a lot of text on your website can be overwhelming for some users. An accessibility overlay can help break up the text to be easier to read.

Different colors

Some users have difficulty distinguishing between different colors. An accessibility overlay can help these users by changing the colors of your website to make them more distinguishable.

Images

Some users have difficulty understanding images. An accessibility overlay can provide descriptions of images so that everyone can understand them.

Creating an accessibility overlay is not difficult, and it can make a big difference for some of your website’s users. If you think an accessibility overlay would benefit your website, follow the steps below to create one.

How to create an accessibility overlay for your website

There are a few different ways to create an accessibility overlay for your website. We will walk you through two of the most popular methods.

Option One: Using a Plugin

If you use WordPress, there are many plugins that you can use to create an accessibility overlay. One of our favorites is accessiBe.

Simply install and activate it on your WordPress site to use this plugin. Once it is activated, you will see a new settings page where you can customize your accessibility overlay.

Option Two: Manual Code

If you don’t use WordPress or prefer not to use a plugin, you can also manually code your accessibility overlay.

To do this, you will need to create a new file called “overlay.js” and add the following code to it:

Once you have saved your file, you will need to upload it to your website’s server. Once it is uploaded, you will need to add the following code to your website’s HTML:

Testing and troubleshooting your accessibility overlay

After you have created and implemented your accessibility overlay, it is important to test it to ensure it is working properly. One way to do this is to use a screen reader.

If you are not familiar with using a screen reader, many online tutorials can help you get started.

Once you have tested your accessibility overlay, it is important to monitor it regularly to ensure that it is still working properly. If you notice any issues, fix them as soon as possible.

Tips for maintaining an accessible website

You can do a few things to help ensure that your website remains accessible to everyone.

First, it is important to keep your accessibility overlay up-to-date. If you add new content to your website, be sure to update your accessibility overlay so that it can properly describe the new content.

Second, it is important to monitor your website regularly for any changes that might affect its accessibility. If you notice anything that does not seem to be working properly, be sure to fix it as soon as possible.

Lastly, it is important to educate yourself and your team about accessibility. The more you know about accessibility, the more likely you will create an accessible website.

About Me

Hi! I'm Annie and I have 3 kids (all in their teens - yikes!). My mommy blog isn't all about lunches and DIY - it's also about humour. Like how my kids make fun of my texts as if I don't know how to use emojis (I DO!). Now that I have a bit more time - since my kids don't want to hang out with me (teenagers), I have taken up blogging.
