5 Unconventional Indoor Activities for Your Next Staycation

March 25, 2021 by Annie

Sometimes, you don’t need to get out of town to have a great vacation, which can be a great money saver since the average cost of a domestic vacation is $144 a day!

Read on to learn all about the top indoor activities for your next staycation.

1. Crafts, Crafts, and More Crafts

Looking to get something done? There are tons of crafts you can incorporate into your next staycation.

You can create things that you’ll be able to use throughout your staycation, like candles, bath bombs, lip scrubs, and many others.

You can also decorate items you’ll be able to use in your home for ages to come, like wine glasses, mugs, Or create themed items like ornaments for any upcoming events you have coming up.

Try learning one of the more complicated craft skills out there for even more fun. Macrame, knitting, and embroidery can help you make something cuddly for your home. Use decoupage to upcycle some of your old furniture or knickknacks.

Paper mache is one of the messier options out there, but it can provide oodles of fun for the whole family. Scrapbooking can help you maintain memories of your amazing staycation (or any other past events) for years to come. Learn origami to make fun shapes and animals out of paper you can decorate your whole home with.

These are just a few of the top craft ideas out there. If you are looking for more craft-related resources, make sure that you check out the crafts glossary today.

2. Have A Spa Day

You can recreate the experience of being in a fancy spa from the privacy of your own home.

Buy sheet masks from your favorite beauty outlet, or create your own D.I.Y. natural facemasks to save even more money. That can combine your love of spa days with your love of crafts!

Some ingredients you can use in your D.I.Y. face masks include green tea, banana, avocados, honey, olive oil, oatmeal, lemon juice, aloe vera, and many others. You can also use similar ingredients to create your own foot or hand scrub, hair mask, face wash, and so much more.

Have a hand and foot massage train to help you truly relax and let go during your staycation. Add more ambiance, light some candles, hang out in your bathrobe, and play calming music.

3. Create Your Own Campout

You don’t need to take to the great outdoors to have a great time camping. You can set up your own campsite in your own backyard! Set up a tent or a hut in your backyard.

Set up a nice campfire so that you can roast marshmallows or hot dogs around a fire — of course, make sure that there’s no fire ban in your area and that you have any permits you need.

If you don’t have a backyard or the weather’s not holding up, you can also set up your campsite indoors.

That makes this one of the top indoor activities out there for your next staycation. Tell scary stories around a fake campfire (use a flashlight and cellophane) or read any of the many camping-themed books out there.

Try incorporating some rainy day crafts into your indoor campout, too. Make your own lanterns to add to the feel of your exciting indoor campout. You can use tin cans, old jars, or other household materials so that you won’t be wasting unnecessary items and causing damage to the environment.

Create camping-themed collages to bring to mind the great outdoors and friendship bracelets to commemorate the experience. And, buy plenty of popsicle sticks to try some of the many popsicle stick crafts out there.

Don’t skip on the s’mores, which you can make on the stove rather than on fire. Put glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling to add to the ambiance of your indoor camping extravaganza.

4. Movie Marathon

Setting up a fancier approach to a binge-watch can transform your next staycation and leave you with happy memories for years to come.

Theme your movie weekend around a theme for the optimal movie marathon experience. Here are a few themes you can consider:

  • Watch all your favorite director’s movie
  • Horror or zombie movie marathon
  • Movies based on Shakespeare plays
  • Musicals
  • Movies that make you nostalgic for your teenage years
  • The top heist movies
  • Movies directed or written by women
  • The best Pixar or Disney cartoons out there

You can also create decorations and foods themed around your movie marathon, adding another level of cohesiveness for your amazing staycation.

5. Eat and Drink

The food can be the best part of a vacation. So, it can be the best part of your staycation as well.

Try ordering from all the restaurants in your area that you’ve meant to try out but haven’t quite gotten to yet. Or, try out a meal prep service so that you’ll be able to create your own food luxuriously.

You can also customize your drinking experience for your staycation. Try making various luxury cocktails for the ultimate holiday. Or, buy a sampling of local craft beers or wine so you can find the best that your city or state has to offer you.

Get Started With These Indoor Activities

You’ll be able to amuse your whole family with these indoor activities. And, you’ll be telling stories about your amazing staycation for years to come.

About Me

Hi! I'm Annie and I have 3 kids (all in their teens - yikes!). My mommy blog isn't all about lunches and DIY - it's also about humour. Like how my kids make fun of my texts as if I don't know how to use emojis (I DO!). Now that I have a bit more time - since my kids don't want to hang out with me (teenagers), I have taken up blogging.
