5 Practical Tips for Cutting Down Household Expenses

July 22, 2021 by Annie

Household expenses take up a large chunk of our budgets. And while some expenses, like rent payments, can’t be reduced, the good news is that there are several things that you can do to cut the cost of many other household expenses from bills to groceries and other things that you need to spend money on in your home. From savvier shopping to using comparison sites when you need to change your utilities, you could be saving more money than you realize. Here are some practical tips to keep in mind.

Make Your Own Coffee:

Most of us enjoy a good cup of coffee to get us going in the morning but getting it from a coffee shop can quickly eat away at your household budget. Instead, consider investing in a coffee machine for your home, so that you can make your favorite drink for yourself in the morning at a fraction of the price. With pod coffee machines and pods available from brands like Starbucks, you will hardly be able to tell the difference between a coffee made by a barista and a coffee made at home – and they’re easy for anyone to use too. Check out deals on pods to save money on your morning coffee.

Shop Online:

When getting groceries, shopping online can be easier for saving money compared to going into the supermarket or grocery store since it allows you to look for better deals and compare prices from different stores. Today, most supermarkets have grocery apps that you can use to order your food and grocery shopping to be delivered directly to your home or to be picked up by you at your local store, which can also help you save time as well as money. Plus, ordering online from home makes it easier for you to order while checking what you’ve already got in the kitchen, so you don’t end up spending money on things you don’t need.

Shop Around:

Whether you want to change your utility provider, switch to a new TV and broadband company or get new insurance for your car, renewing with your current provider might be more expensive than you realize. If you have plans and contracts that are almost coming to an end, it’s worth taking the time to use comparison sites to see if there are any better deals on offer from different providers. You can either take advantage of these deals by switching or get in touch with your current provider to see if they will offer a price match.

SIM-Only Contract:

Smartphones are becoming more and more expensive, and they’re also becoming a necessary household expense. However, you might want to consider saving money by signing up for a SIM-only contract rather than getting a two-year contract that includes the phone. You can combine this with a refurbished handset to save even more money and enjoy more flexibility.

Energy Saving Appliances:

Finally, if you’re upgrading some appliances in your home or even getting new light bulbs, get energy saving options. Over time, energy saving light bulbs can help you save more money than you might realize on your electric bills, and they also last much longer compared to standard light bulbs meaning that you don’t have to pay to replace them quite as often either. When it comes to appliances, the most energy-efficient options might set you back a little more initially, but they are definitely worth the extra investment since they will eventually pay for themselves with the savings that you’ll make.

Whether you want to cut back on monthly household expenses or get something new for your household for less, keep these tips in mind.

About Me

Hi! I'm Annie and I have 3 kids (all in their teens - yikes!). My mommy blog isn't all about lunches and DIY - it's also about humour. Like how my kids make fun of my texts as if I don't know how to use emojis (I DO!). Now that I have a bit more time - since my kids don't want to hang out with me (teenagers), I have taken up blogging.
