Using CBD Oil for Your Pets

May 19, 2020 by Annie

Pets are a very important part of daily lives for most people. They are primarily kept as companions and for entertainment rather than for work, although some can be used for such as in the case of dogs that are used for hunting, as police dogs, and for military operations. Some of the most common pets include dogs, cats, rabbits, pigs, rodents, hamsters, turtles, guinea pigs, snakes, ferrets, etc. with dogs and cats the most popular of the lot. You can read more about all the various types here.

Domestic animals need a lot of attention and care as they can easily get exposed to a variety of diseases. In this regard, it is a responsible thing for owners to make sure they do not get sick by being unnecessarily exposed and if by chance they do, to take care of them as early and quickly as possible. For starters, they must take them to visit the vet regularly and also administer whatever drugs they need.

What is CBD Oil?

One drug that is growing increasingly popular as an option to use in treating or taking care of pets is CBD oil. This is a compound gotten from cannabinoids, one of the many different ones found in the hemp plant. Some of the other compounds include flavonoids, terpenes, essential oils, and omega fatty acids.

A cannabinoid is extracted using various methods from the stem, flowers, stalk, and leaves of the hemp plant and there are three different types of these extracts. These are: full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and isolate. Isolate is the purest form while full-spectrum and broad-spectrum both contain a range of cannabinoids which include CBC, CBN, CBA, and CBG. They may also contain slight traces of THC. Note that the allowable legal limit of THC in the United States in 0.3%.

The best type of cannabinoid to administer to your pet is either a full or broad spectrum. This is because they produce what is referred to as the “entourage effect” when used. This is an effect that causes the endocannabinoid system or ECS in the body to be activated and to be more effective and efficient. What Diseases or Ailment Can CBD Oil Treat in Your Pet?

Pain and Inflammation

For animals going through any form of pain, CBD oil is helpful in the management of all kinds of pains. Studies show that it can stop the body from breaking down anandamide which is a chemical that dampens pain signals in the brain. It also works as an anti-inflammatory drug by reducing inflammation caused by any form of the disease.

Stress and Anxiety

Just like humans, animals too suffer from stress and anxiety for a variety of reasons. This can be due to sickness, noise, separation, etc. You might notice that your pet may be restless and may not be able to relax or sleep. CBD oil targets certain receptors in the endocannabinoid system and thus produces anti-anxiety substances like serotine which then results in a better mood for your pet. With this state of calm achieved, it may be able to sleep more easily.

Seizures

Seizures are involuntary actions where the muscles contract and your pet for that moment will not be able to control what is happening. It is caused by a problem with the brain and it is not a lovely experience for both you and your pet. Because CBD works with the endocannabinoid system which regulates how the brain and body systems work, administering it will help fix whatever the issue is and help your pet feel well again.

What About Dosing?

No matter the kind of pet you have, you may be able to administer CBD oil but because dogs and cats are the most common pets, you will find more guidelines on how to administer this medication to these two animals. There are presently no official CBD dosages available for animals so most manufacturers and retailers provide a guide on how to administer it with their products. You can find more information, guidelines, and dosage calculators online to help you properly apply dosages. Another option is talking to your vet. They will guide you on what to do.

Usually, though, the dosages you administer will be based on your pet’s age, size, weight, and ailment to be treated. The bigger the animal, the higher the dosage will be. Even if your animal is well, you can still administer CBD oil daily to help maintain its wellbeing.

Buying CBD Oil

Buying CBD products can be very tricky so it is always advisable to buy from sources you know and trust. With this, you can be sure you are buying a high-quality product that will help your animal rather than harm it.

Although there are many different sources to buy from, avoid purchasing just from anywhere. Seek and search out quality retailers. Check if the product is organic and ask for a lab report if unsure. Also, always check labels when buying to know what constitutes whatever you are buying. Finally, avoid cheap products as they are more likely to contain unhealthy additives.

About Me

Hi! I'm Annie and I have 3 kids (all in their teens - yikes!). My mommy blog isn't all about lunches and DIY - it's also about humour. Like how my kids make fun of my texts as if I don't know how to use emojis (I DO!). Now that I have a bit more time - since my kids don't want to hang out with me (teenagers), I have taken up blogging.
