How to select a senior living community

August 26, 2020 by Annie

Many people experience some frustration as they grow older because they lose part of their ability to take care of themselves as they used to. Others lose complete control over the ability to take care of themselves either due to age or medical reasons. Whatever reasons lead you or your loved one to decide to join a senior living community, it is best to take the necessary steps to pick the best one for you. A senior living advisor can guide you through the process of selecting one. Here are four aspects to consider.

You wants and needs

These will help you Select Senior Communities that fit your needs. You or your loved one and your advisor will collaborate to figure out the best senior community for you. Some key aspects to consider include;

  1. What can you do and what do you want to continue doing for yourself? (Determines the price point and type)
  2. Do you have any medical problems that need special care and attention? (Determines the price point and type)
  3. Where do you want to stay? How close or far can you stay from your loved ones? (Determines the location)
  4. How much are you willing to pay? (Determines the price point.)

The senior living professional will use the details above to give you a list of communities that can fit your needs.

The type of community

There are several types of senior living communities to pick from. They include;

  1. Respite Care – A respite care centre offers temporary care to the sick, elderly or disabled providing relief to their regular carers
  2. Convalescent Care – An older person visits a convalescent care centre to recuperate from a medical procedure, an illness or an injury
  3. Continuing Care Retirement Community – This is a community where seniors with different ranges of needs and ages go to have their needs met.
  4. Senior Apartments – These are apartments within communities designed to meet the needs of older adults
  5. Nursing Homes – This is a private residential institution that accommodates older adults while providing healthcare.
  6. Independent Living community – These are similar to senior apartments. They are housing arrangements designed exclusively for the ageing adult. They offer services, amenities and activities.
  7. Assisted Living – This is another type of housing plan for older adults. The people can live in individual rooms, apartments or shared quarters. They are designed to feel like home and allow the residents independence while assisting them with the daily needs they have.
  8. Adult Day Care – Just like a children’s daycare, an adult day care creates a safe, friendly environment for older adults to stay during the day. They relieve the regular caregivers of their duties for that time.
  9. Memory Care – If you or your loved ones have memory issues like from dementia or Alzheimer’s, you can take them to Memory care. Here they will receive specialized care that caters to people with memory problems.
  10. Hospice Care – This type of care centre caters to people with advanced life-limiting illnesses. It helps them live full, comfortable lives as they endure the disease.

Price point

The quality of care and facilities at a senior living community determines the price point. It is best to pick a community that you can afford comfortable, and that can simultaneously meet you or your loved one’s needs. You can look into discount eligibility, for example, ex-veterans can have some of the costs paid for

Location

An advisor will help you look for a community in the area of your choice. Maybe you want to be close to your grandchildren or favour a particular climate. They should help you find the intersection point of all your needs.

Most people look for senior living communities when they need them. However, it does not hurt to do a little shopping before the time comes. It can allow you to work out what you will need before you are admitted to such a community. For example, you can figure out what to do with your current home. The goal is to go through that phase of your life as comfortably as possible.

About Me

Hi! I'm Annie and I have 3 kids (all in their teens - yikes!). My mommy blog isn't all about lunches and DIY - it's also about humour. Like how my kids make fun of my texts as if I don't know how to use emojis (I DO!). Now that I have a bit more time - since my kids don't want to hang out with me (teenagers), I have taken up blogging.
