Ways To Help Your Child Manage Stress

August 11, 2021 by Annie

Believe it or not, children deal with stress just like adults. It is easy to dismiss the possibility, seeing that kids appear to be carefree individuals. However, children are exposed to stress through school, learning new things as well as dealing with new emotions. It is totally normal for a child to deal with stress, but it is important for parents to help them through it. This article will highlight ways to help your child manage stress.

  • Talk About It: For younger children, stress is usually a new feeling, and they might not fully understand what they are going through. The inability to understand might heighten the emotional tension, as they are at a loss of how to deal with it. Talking about it might go a long way in managing stress. Tell your child that you have noticed a change in their attitude, asking them what is wrong. Encourage them to discuss the problem with you, and listen attentively. Avoid invalidating the feelings of your child, instead of providing them with all the emotional support that they need.
  • Watch The Schedule: One of the major stressors of children is overscheduling. This refers to a situation where your kids do not have downtime to simply be children. Spending long hours at school, only to come home to more studying can result in stress in your child. Let your child enjoy their weekend, while also leaving a few hours before bedtime free.
  • Let Them Play: You definitely want your child to grow up into a rounded adult. As such, it is important to let them play and enjoy themselves. One mistake that parents make is always trying to tie their children’s play hours to lessons and end goals. This is simply a continuation of what goes on in school, thereby increasing the possibility of stress. Allow your child to have fun without pressure. Activities such as riding bicycles and playing football are good for the physical and emotional well-being of your kids.
  • Deal With Your Own Stress: Adults have a lot of stressors, from work to bills, dealing with the kids, and maintaining relationships. As a result, a lot of people go back to their homes, stressed out after a long day. While it is quite normal to be stressed, it is important to avoid affecting your children with it. Some children get stressed because of their parents. When they deal with their parents in a poor mood, they might think that they are the cause. This will leave them worried, thereby resulting in stress. In the same vein, stress can make adults really disoriented and disorganized. All of this has negative effects on children.

All in all, it is important to always pay attention to your children. Stress management is an essential part of child care. Be their friends, so they can open up to you about their stressors, allowing you to help them deal with it. Be kind and help them to understand all that they are feeling.

About Me

Hi! I'm Annie and I have 3 kids (all in their teens - yikes!). My mommy blog isn't all about lunches and DIY - it's also about humour. Like how my kids make fun of my texts as if I don't know how to use emojis (I DO!). Now that I have a bit more time - since my kids don't want to hang out with me (teenagers), I have taken up blogging.
