In-Home Care Services For Dementia Patients

February 26, 2018 by Annie

Dementia is a condition associated with memory loss and other symptoms that interfere with the daily activities of a patient. These symptoms affect the way a patient communicates, thus making it difficult to perform their daily tasks. Taking care of your loved one diagnosed with dementia is a very involving task. A dementia patient deserves specialised care. It is therefore important to seek professional help. An in-home caregiver has been trained efficiently to give compassionate care to a patient. Getting these services will improve the health condition of your loved one. It will also free you as you will be able to attend to other duties comfortably knowing your loved one is well taken care of. Professional caregivers offer a variety of services.

Personal care

A skilled caregiver helps the patient with the essential activities. This includes assisting the patient to access the toilet and bathroom safely, dressing and feeding. Dementia patients sometimes skip meal times or get distracted and fail to finish their meals due to memory loss. A caregiver ensures your beloved eats the correct quality and quantity of food as advised by the doctor and at the correct time. Caregivers also help in assuring that the patient is clean and healthy all the time.

Housekeeping

Dementia patients are likely to forget their household chores. Dementia care at home may include assisting clients with some household chores. They perform basic cleaning activities like washing dishes and sweeping. They also prepare meals for your loved one. These services extend to shopping for groceries and light cleaning.

Skilled services

In-home caregivers are trained to give medical aid. They make sure the patient takes medication at the right time as instructed by their doctor. This comes in handy when the patient has medication administered by injection. Live-in caregivers have knowledge of wound dressing and know what to do when the patient goes through certain dementia incidents.

Dementia patients may require physical therapy regularly. Professional caregivers have creatively thought-out activities they perform with patients to improve their physical and mental health. These activities include puzzles, games, and reading.

Emotional therapy

Live-in carers are experienced and know how to relate to a dementia patient effectively. Within a very short time, they make sure your loved one feels safe and settled. They are tolerant and can hold long conversations with a patient, keeping your beloved engaged. A caregiver knows how best and quickest to cool the patient’s anxiety. This eliminates boredom and contributes to overall emotional health.

When you consider seeking professional assistance, do detailed research on the institutions offering these services. Engage with them and voice any concerns you might have concerning the services offered. Also, read reviews and references and settle for a live-in care service offering institution that is licensed and trusted.

About Me

Hi! I'm Annie and I have 3 kids (all in their teens - yikes!). My mommy blog isn't all about lunches and DIY - it's also about humour. Like how my kids make fun of my texts as if I don't know how to use emojis (I DO!). Now that I have a bit more time - since my kids don't want to hang out with me (teenagers), I have taken up blogging.
