How To Make Moving Abroad Easier For Your Family

June 25, 2018 by Annie

If you are thinking of moving abroad, then it is an exciting time. You may need to relocate for a variety of reasons, such as starting a new job in a new country or moving to spend time with family elsewhere in the world. Of course, if you have a family, then you may worry about how the move could affect them. This is only natural and a feeling that many parents have when moving abroad.

Great ways to make it easier on kids

Luckily for parents, the truth is that your children will adapt very quickly to the move and often quicker than you do! Children are very resilient, and this means that the move should go smoothly for them if handled correctly.

Read on for a few great ways to make sure that this happens for your move:

Tell them about it early

One way to make any move abroad easier for children is to tell them about it as soon as you can. A lot of the anxiety that they may feel is about leaving their old routine behind and facing a new set of challenges in your new life together. By giving them lots of time to get used to the idea, it helps them to process it before you leave. This sets them up perfectly to hit the ground running and enjoy it when you make the move.

Sort out their room

The bedroom is a vital part of any house but particularly for your children. This is even truer when you move abroad as it becomes their sanctuary and place in which to relax. With this in mind, it is worth sorting out your children’s bedrooms as a top priority when you arrive in the new house. This will make them feel happier and more settled.

Make sure to choose their school carefully

As in your current country, your children’s school will play a big part in their lives. Take the time before you leave to research and apply to a quality school in the area to which you are moving. Naturally, you will want to find somewhere that is great academically but also helps their personal development. When going abroad, an international school like SAIS.edu.sg is often the best option to meet these needs.

Help them stay in touch

For many kids, moving abroad is hard as they will be leaving their old friends behind. To make this easier, make sure that you have emails and phone numbers for the children themselves or their parents if of a younger age. This will make it simple for them to stay in touch and hear a familiar voice.

Moving abroad is fabulous

There is no doubt that making the move abroad can open up an exciting, new chapter in your family’s life. To really make sure that this is true for your kids, follow some of the above tips to help them adjust in no time at all.

About Me

Hi! I'm Annie and I have 3 kids (all in their teens - yikes!). My mommy blog isn't all about lunches and DIY - it's also about humour. Like how my kids make fun of my texts as if I don't know how to use emojis (I DO!). Now that I have a bit more time - since my kids don't want to hang out with me (teenagers), I have taken up blogging.
