How to activate and configure Android or iOS parental control

May 19, 2020 by Annie

More than half (56%) of children between 8 and 12 years old are exposed to digital threats, such as video game addiction, cyberbullying and online sexual behavior, in a scenario considered as a “cyber risk pandemic”. The data are from the DQ 2018 impact report, conducted by the DQ Institute in partnership with the World Economic Forum. The behavior of 34,000 schoolchildren from 29 countries on online child safety and digital citizenship was assessed.

The survey found that 47% of children were victims of cyberbullying in 2017, 10% talked to strangers on the networks and set up face-to-face meetings, and 17% had some sexual behavior online. According to the report, an estimated 260 million children worldwide are involved in cyber risks, and the number is expected to increase to 390 million by 2020.

Even though the risk on the network is widespread, the DQ 2018 study shows that threats are 33% greater in emerging countries. “This is due in large part to the rapid adoption of mobile technology and the use of a digital platform without adequate preparation of children,” says the report. According to the survey, the internet has a faster influence in these countries, which should represent 90% of all young internet users by 2020. Another important fact raised in the survey shows that, on average, children they spend 32 hours a week alone in front of digital screens, whether on cell phones, tablets or computers, in search of entertainment. A relatively longer time spent at school.

The report also pointed out that more than half of the children surveyed access the internet from their mobile devices – the majority (60%) receive their first cell phone when they reach ten years old and 85% of them have some social network, even if the age allowed to use platforms from 13 years old.

Among the children’s favorite activities is watching videos (72%). Listening to music and searching for different topics follows with equal percentages (51%). Playing video games (49%) and chatting (38%) are also among the preferences. It is not surprising that the most popular site in this age group is YouTube, the network most used by 54% of respondents, that is why parents need to know how to put parental controls on YouTube. Then WhatsApp (45%), Facebook (28%), Instagram (27%) and Snapchat (23%) appear. Facebook and Twitter have proved to be significantly popular with children from emerging countries.
