Fun in the Sun: 7 Summer Activities for Kids

May 27, 2021 by Annie

Summer’s just around the corner, and for many, this means a complete change in the weather. After months of gray skies and rainy days, the sun’s finally peeking its head out of the clouds for some much-needed sunshine!

Not to mention, most kids will be out of school too. Put these two factors together, and it’s a fantastic opportunity to head outside for some quality time. It’s a great way to get your children’s noses out of their devices too!

But are you stumped on what to do? Not to worry. Here are 7 summer activities for kids you should have your little ones try!

1. Go on a Family Bike Riding Trip

If you’re looking for cheap summer activities for kids, here’s one that’s easy to pull off! This is especially true if all your family members already have bikes and they’re well-maintained.

Find a nice bike route that’s not too difficult or too long. The last thing you want is hot and cranky kids!

Pack a picnic basket full of snacks or even a light meal, depending on when you’re biking. And make sure there’s plenty of water so no one ends up dehydrated.

Make sure everyone is wearing biking-appropriate clothes (garments that aren’t too loose or long) and get all safety gear on. Slather on some sunblock and you’re ready to go!

2. Set Up a Lemonade Stand

Do your children want some spending money? Then make them earn it this summer! One of the best outdoor summer activities for kids is to set up lemonade stands. Not only does this teach them about the value of money, but it also allows them to sharpen their social skills.

Just make sure that they’re in a safe area of the neighborhood and that they’re always supervised.

3. Build a Lego City in Your Backyard

Don’t feel like going anywhere? Then you’re probably curious about summer activities for kids at home.

Building a Lego city in your backyard is a great idea since all you have to do is get a tub of Legos and let your children go crazy with it. While they can certainly build things inside the house, take advantage of the good weather and set up shop outside.

Open up your patio umbrella, mix up some lemonade, and read a good book while you enjoy yourselves in your backyard. If you want a more hands-on approach, feel free to join in on the Lego fun!

4. Go Backyard Camping

Here’s another at-home idea if you don’t want to go very far and love the comforts of your home too much to go on a real camping trip!

Grab your tent and pitch it in the middle of your yard. Have your kids help too to make it a fun learning experience!

If you’ve got a firepit already, then that can make things super-fun. You’ll be able to make s’mores around an elevated campfire.

And once the sun goes down, you can lie down on the grass to stare up at the stars. Turn it into a fun astronomy class so your little ones are still learning over the summer!

Then, get inside the tent, zip it up, and tell some scary stories if your kids are up for it.

If they’re old enough, they might not want their parents around for the overnight camping session, especially if they have friends over. Take your cue to leave and treat yourself to a (mostly) kid-free evening in your house.

5. Go Swimming

The ideal way to go swimming would be to take a dip in a nearby beach, lake, or river. But not all of us are so lucky to live by such wonderful nature.

For the next best thing, take your kids to the local pool. You can get your tan on while your little ones splash about. Or you can join them too!

In any case, swimming is an excellent way for your kids to get some physical activity in. In the US, 72% of adolescents don’t get enough physical activity, so take every chance you can get to get your children up and about.

6. Volunteer With Local Organizations

It’s important to teach your kids social responsibility from a young age. Volunteering can be a great way to do so, and most likely, there are plenty of organizations that could use your help!

Sign your family up for an afternoon of cleaning up the local park or beach. Not only will your little ones get to stretch their legs, but they’ll also get to be proud of the work they’ve done for the local community.

7. Make a Bird Feeder

For something more arts and craftsy, consider making a bird feeder or two with your little ones. They’re very easy to make; all you need is some toilet paper tubes, some birdseed, and peanut butter.

Having your kids make a bird feeder teaches them about caring for nature. And once they’re done and hang these feeders up, they’ll get to see their little bird buddies come feed all summer, whether they’re indoors or outdoors.

While doing the above activities, don’t forget about outfit ideas for kids too. You’ll want your little ones to stay nice and comfy, after all!

Try These Summer Activities for Kids

Now you have a great list of summer activities for kids your children can try out.

Of course, this is just a starting point! If you run into any other parents, make sure you pick their brains for some more ideas. You can never have too many summer break ideas, after all!

And who knows: if those parents are looking for playmates for their kids, that just might be your way in for not only expanding your own social circle, but your children’s as well. It’s a win-win situation!
