Dos And Don’ts Of Estate Cleanout

February 10, 2020 by Annie

Estate cleanout is an emotionally difficult process, especially when it involves the death of a near and dear. Estate cleanout takes places due to a death of a loved one, divorce, financial crisis or a lifestyle change.

In an estate cleanout, you can make a lot of mistakes, because you become emotionally unstable and grieved over the circumstances. However, these dos and don’ts will help you in executing the whole thing smoothly and efficiently.

Dos of Estate Cleanout

  1. Make sure to secure all the financial documents. You never know which thing may come in handy and which documents may be important. There may be payments, debts to clear, and other liabilities of the deceased or due to financial crisis and you do not want the make the whole case complicated in the end.
  2. Hang on to personal stuff, photographs and other stuff which you can keep as memories of your loved one. These items are a treasure for the family members while mean nothing to others. You can keep them and show them to your children and grandchildren.
  3. Many times people tend to put things in the most unlikely places and also have many secret hideouts. Check thoroughly and go through each and everything of your loved one. There may be valuable stuff in the back for the drawers or in secret places of the cupboards. Do not forget to check the pockets as well.
  4. Take help from friends and family in this time of distress. You will be emotionally drained and will surely require help.
  5. Make sure to discuss with all family members about the stuff. Many times family members would want to share and divide the things. Do this with mutual agreement.
  6. Donate and sell the stuff in the house. Separate the stuff which you can sell and donate the stuff which is used and in good condition like furniture, clothes, medicines and other stuff.
  7. Do hire a same day junk removal service if you are unable to do the cleanout or there are conflicts with the family members on the cleanup.

Don’ts of Estate Cleanout

  1. Do not handle the estate cleanout process alone as you may be under emotional distress and fell more saddened when you are going through the cleanout process. Although it many serve as a distraction from the grief, it is advised to take help
  2. Do not handover the property to the estate cleanout process without checking yourself first. There may be some valuable which is passed down from generations and you will want to keep them as keepsakes, rather than donating or selling it.
  3. Do not give away photographs, prized possessions and other personal stuff which have no money value but will be your treasured memories.
  4. Do not give things away, donate or sell without taking consent from other family members. They have an equal part in everything and all the stuff should be cleared with mutual consent and decisions.

Conclusion

Estate cleanout is not an easy task and it may take months to clean especially if it was an old family member as they would have accumulated ample stuff over the years. It’s better to use a same day junk removal to ensure a proper cleanout.

About Me

Hi! I'm Annie and I have 3 kids (all in their teens - yikes!). My mommy blog isn't all about lunches and DIY - it's also about humour. Like how my kids make fun of my texts as if I don't know how to use emojis (I DO!). Now that I have a bit more time - since my kids don't want to hang out with me (teenagers), I have taken up blogging.
