Are Termites Making a Meal of Your Home

November 26, 2018 by Annie

Termites actually serve a useful purpose; they breakdown detritus to boost the nutrient levels in the soil.

Unfortunately the same process is used when they make themselves comfortable in your home. The answer is that your home can become damaged or even structurally unstable; it depends how much of the wood they eat.

If you think you have a termite problem you need to call the professionals; find out more here.

How To Tell If They Are Making A Meal Of Your Home

Termites are generally considered an issue for houses made of wood. However, a termite can actually move through plaster and metal siding. It’s also worth noting that virtually all houses have wood in them; even if the main structure is brick.

Once in the framework they can happily feed on any wood they come into contact with, whether it’s the structure of your home or your furnishings.

The problem is that much of this work can be done without your knowledge. In many cases termites don’t leave many clues of their presence until you notice the damage.

There are several signs you need to look for. If you see any of these you must investigate further and, if necessary call a professional to find out more info.

  • Water Damage

If a stain appears that looks like water damage then you may assume you have a leaking pipe or roof. However, think about where your water pipes are positioned before you jump to any conclusions. This can also be a sign of termite infestation.

  • Wood Holes

If you’re wooden frames or furniture appears to have a maze of small holes then it’s a good chance that you’ve found some of the tunnels belonging to a termite home. In furniture these tunnels often only become visible when the veneer cracks. The problem is that this means the infestation is deep and significant.

It is possible you’ll find small piles of sawdust near these holes; this is simply confirmation that you have an issue with termites.

  • Exterior Holes

Termites still move in and out of your home; even while they are happy eating your house round you. If you have soil round the edge of your home then take a look at it; you’re likely to see small holes at regular intervals. These are the entry and exit points for the termites.

To confirm you can cover one hole. It will either be open again the next day or they’ll be a new hole near it.

  • Smell

A termite nest will emit a smell which is very similar to mold or mildew. If you detect this smell then it is worth looking round the area to see if there are any other signs of termite invasion.

It’s not enough to wait for visible signs of a termite infestation. You are better off booking an annual visit where the professionals can keep an eye on your home and react quickly if a problem appears to be developing.

About Me

Hi! I'm Annie and I have 3 kids (all in their teens - yikes!). My mommy blog isn't all about lunches and DIY - it's also about humour. Like how my kids make fun of my texts as if I don't know how to use emojis (I DO!). Now that I have a bit more time - since my kids don't want to hang out with me (teenagers), I have taken up blogging.
