There’s nothing quite like having a full day planned with your kids, only to watch those plans sink as the rain starts. But just because it’s a rainy day doesn’t mean your time with your kids has to be a wash. There are plenty of fun things to do when it’s raining.
Whether you need to pass a few minutes or a few hours, here are 5 fun rainy day activities to do with your kids.
1. Have a Movie Marathon
Rainy days are perfect excuses to do something low-key, like having a movie marathon. Pick something the whole family can enjoy together, and settle in with some snacks for your movie day (or night!).
2. Read a Book
When it comes to rainy day indoor activities, snuggling up with a book is perfect. You can revisit an old favorite, or take the time to introduce them to new, longer books.
You can read to them or take turns reading. It’s a great way to introduce new vocabulary and new concepts to them.
And if the weather looks like it’s going to be bad for a while, why not pick out a series of books and go on a “vacation”? You could visit an imaginary world, outer space, or the rainforest.
3. Cooking and Baking
Cooking or baking with your kids doesn’t have to be complicated. You can teach them a family favorite recipe and pass down your knowledge to the next generation.
If you’re worried about safety, try something simpler like no-bake cookies. These are a favorite of many, and they’re easy to make. You could also try no-bake granola bars, homemade pizza bagels, and tons of other kid-friendly foods.
Getting your kids involved with making something is a great bonding experience. It’s also a great way to teach them the importance of reading, following directions, and math.
4. Coloring Books
Coloring books are a great way to keep your children busy for hours. And it’s much better for them to color where you want them to than where you don’t want to unless you want to spend your free time removing crayon marks from your walls.
If you don’t have any coloring books handy don’t worry; you can find your own online. Try to find ones that feature subjects your kids will like, like this spinosaurus coloring page, which features one of the most popular and coolest looking dinosaurs.
5. Diamond Painting
Arts and crafts such as diamond painting are a great way for your children to learn a new skill, and have fun at the same time. As a relaxing indoor activity, the adults will also appreciate this one.
6. Rearrange Their Room
Channel your interior designer and consider rearranging your kids’ room. Update bedsheets, rearrange furniture, and reconfigure the space for your growing kids.
You can get them involved by having them help organize their room’s makeover. Are there any toys they are no longer playing with? Now would be a great time for them to organize their toys and set unused toys aside for donations.
Make the Most Out of Rainy Day Activities
Whatever you decide to do with your kids, try to make it a bonding activity. Your time with them is short, and before you know it they will be more independent and want to spend time on their own. Try and make the most out of your fun rainy day activities.
