Fashionable flying: What to wear as you take to the skies

June 8, 2019 by Annie

It would be fair to say that the aviation landscape has changed a lot over the last few years. The emergence of budget airlines means that an element of glamour has been detracted from when you take to the skies – unless of course you fly in one of the more premium seats.

As such, taking to the air in a suit or extravagant dress is now not regarded as the norm. Instead, staying comfortable is, but there is of course a fine-balance between this and staying moderately fashionable.

This is going to be the focus of today’s topic. Let’s now mull over some of the best things you can wear the next time you jet off on your vacation.

It starts with your footwear

There will always be a huge variety of choice for fashionable flying in 2019. However, as mentioned, balancing comfort and style can be difficult, so check out these chunky trainers which will tick both boxes.

Remember, when you fly your feet tend to expand, so wearing something that is going to accommodate this is paramount – particularly if you are flying long haul and the effect is emphasised.

To add to this point, don’t be afraid of supplementing this footwear with some compression socks. On the topic of your feet expanding, these socks can prove to be invaluable and can do you umpteen favours from a health perspective.

Take advantage of layers

We’ve all heard the wonders of layering, but a lot of people ignore this advice when it comes to flying. The general thought is that because they are flying to a warm destination, they don’t need to wear much for the flight itself.

Well, this is one of the biggest myths you can fall for. Planes get cold, and there will be occasions where the on-board blanket isn’t sufficient. Arm yourself with a long cardigan or pullover; you can quickly remove if the temperature does rise.

Turn to cotton trousers

Sure, jeans might be your thing on a day-to-day basis, but when it comes to flying they just aren’t going to work. They are not breathable and are not the most flexible material either.

Instead, turn to something like cotton trousers. These are the polar-opposite of the above; they are breathable and allow you to move around freely. Not only that, but in a bid to tick the fashion checklist, they tend to go well with a lot of outfits as well.

Or, if dresses are your thing…

If you’re not quite the trouser girl, then there is another option in the form of a maxi dress. As we all know, this is one garment that isn’t going to suit everyone, but it is utterly unrestrictive and probably one of the most comfortable things you can wear as you take to the air.

Some people will still tap into the layering advice to combat the Baltic air conditioning that these flights can prompt – but really the world is your oyster when it comes to pairing maxi dresses with other items of clothing.

About Me

Hi! I'm Annie and I have 3 kids (all in their teens - yikes!). My mommy blog isn't all about lunches and DIY - it's also about humour. Like how my kids make fun of my texts as if I don't know how to use emojis (I DO!). Now that I have a bit more time - since my kids don't want to hang out with me (teenagers), I have taken up blogging.
