Should You Match With Your Guy at Prom

November 1, 2018 by Annie

It’s the age-old question that you ultimately will have to answer if you plan to attend your prom with a date.

You can make all the other prom arrangements first: Where should we eat dinner? Should we get corsages? What about a limo – do you think we should get a limo?

You can have every other detail nailed down, but eventually, you’re going to have to ask yourself – should I match with my prom date?

Maybe you think it’s an antiquated tradition. Maybe you absolutely love the idea of matching with your guy. The good news is, it’s your prom, so you can do anything you want to do! There are so many different options for wardrobe when you’re doing the date thing — style, the color, the cut of your dress, what he’ll wear, and more. Plus, you have to consider what each of you wants. Are you both into the idea of matching? Do you hate it? Do you guys have different opinions?

We’ve laid out the top three options, some of their pros and cons, and why we think you should consider these options.

Option 1: Go Full Out Matching

This option is for the couple who is looking to get as matchy-matchy as possible. You know the type – the proud-to-match couple who’s happily in all white, all black, all blue, or something else great. If you plan to do this, we suggest taking a sample of your dress you bought to the tux shop to find the exact colors that you’re looking for – this is the easiest and most accurate way to make sure you’re getting as matched as possible. Want to go all out and match even more? You guys can get your floral arrangements dyed the same color, too! With this arrangement, one of the positives is that if you want people to know you’re together, they’ll definitely be able to tell. A negative that could pop up is that you guys end up looking a little too matched. This all depends on how you style your dress and tux, though!

Option 2: Do Your Own Things Together

If matching doesn’t really matter to either of you, then don’t sweat it! Like we said, this is your prom, so as long as you feel great (and look great, too!), you’re guaranteed to have a great time. Not matching your prom date is a newer trend, but nonetheless, one that many young couples are moving toward. Although some people might not know that you’re together at the prom solely based on your outfits, not matching can have a lot of benefits. For example, if your date has his heart set on a tux he absolutely loves but it doesn’t match your prom dresses, you can’t say no to (or vice versa), then no one has to compromise! This is a great way for you both to get what you want.

Option 3: Meet in the Middle & Complement

This is an option that tons of couples gravitate toward if they’re not interested in matching exactly but still want people to know that they’re at the prom together with just a glance. Instead of matching colors exactly, try complementing his tux to your dress by pairing accessories that complement each other, or going for a monochromatic look. For example, if your dress is an icy blue, your date can pair his deep, navy tux with you for a complementary look!

About Me

Hi! I'm Annie and I have 3 kids (all in their teens - yikes!). My mommy blog isn't all about lunches and DIY - it's also about humour. Like how my kids make fun of my texts as if I don't know how to use emojis (I DO!). Now that I have a bit more time - since my kids don't want to hang out with me (teenagers), I have taken up blogging.
