Keeping Electronics Safe From Electrical Surges

September 26, 2018 by Annie

Do you know what happens to most electronic items when a surge of power goes through them? The simple answer is that they invariably get damaged or destroyed. Modern electrical systems are incredibly complicated and don’t appreciate sudden surges of power.

Of course on a greater scale a surge of electricity could overload circuits that are already at their maximum output; resulting in a fire. This may just damage the piece of equipment or it could have much greater consequences.

That’s why it’s essential that you take the following steps to protect your electronics from electrical surges:

Surge Protectors

You should invest in surge protecting sockets. These are similar to extension cables and plug directly into the sockets in your home. The surge protecting socket will provide you with enough sockets to meet your electrical demands but it has a built in mechanism that will absorb any surge in current. This ensures your product only gets the power it needs.

The downside of this method is that it only protects anything that is plugged into it.

It’s also worth noting that this type of surge protector will need replacing after a surge has occurred.

Get An Electrician

Before you even start worrying about surge protectors it’s essential that you click here and locate a good electrician. They will be able to inspect your current electrical system to ensure it complies and is efficient.

Once they’ve done this they will be able to advice regarding any issues and the best way for you to handle surge protection. Even more importantly; you’ll have a number to call in an emergency.

Unplug

Never underestimate the importance of unplugging unused items. Not only can you save electricity by unplugging them they are also completely safe against surges; unless they happen to be plugged in again!

Whole House Surge Protection

It is possible to fit a whole house surge protector. It does exactly what it says; protects against all manner of surges including longer lasting ones.

But, it is essential to remember that no surge protection unit can offer protection against a lightning strike. If you find yourself in the middle of an electrical storm you’ll need to unplug as many things as possible.

It is worth noting that a whole house surge protection system will need to be installed by a professional electrician.

Of course the whole house option will ensure your lighting circuits are also protected. This is not something you can easily do with the isolated surge protectors and it is something you’ll appreciate in the middle of a storm.

Battery Backups

It is a good idea to fit separate backup systems to your computers; whether at work or at home. The battery backup system will provide surge protection. It will also give you a temporary power source for your computer; allowing you to finish a transaction or even contact help if required.

The fact that it is separate from the other surge protection systems effectively gives your most sensitive electronic equipment a double layer of protection; that’s always a good idea.

About Me

Hi! I'm Annie and I have 3 kids (all in their teens - yikes!). My mommy blog isn't all about lunches and DIY - it's also about humour. Like how my kids make fun of my texts as if I don't know how to use emojis (I DO!). Now that I have a bit more time - since my kids don't want to hang out with me (teenagers), I have taken up blogging.
