Lawn Care Basics: 5 Tips for a Gorgeous Yard

October 8, 2020 by Annie

Did you know that landscaping can add value to your home? Depending on your location and current landscape, updating your landscape could give you a 100 percent return on investment!

Real estate agents said that landscape updates are among the top four projects to help sell your home.

Whether you are looking to sell your home, a nice, manicured lawn makes you house appealing. Learn how to make your lawn lush and beautiful with these lawn care basics.

1. Mow the Right Length

There is a right way to mow your lawn. If you want your grass to look nice, make sure you always mow with sharp blades. Using sharp blades ensures that your grass is cut clean every time, so get your blades sharpened if you haven’t done it lately and make it a part of your fall or spring routine.

Don’t mow the grass too short to cut corners and mow less. It can actually harm your grass. Mow at a moderate height and cut only about one-third of the height with each mow, which means you may have to mow every five to seven days.

Do not mow when your grass is wet because wet blades are weighed down. Dry grass is upright and ready to be cut.

2. Feed Your Yard

It’s imperative to have enough sun, water, and the right soil for your grass to grow properly. If you have too many trees, you may want to consider tree lopping, so the sun can give your lawn needed light.

Along with sunlight, you may need to add additional nutrients by applying fertilizer. It would be best if you fertilized about twice a year—once during the spring or summer and another time in the fall.

3. Water the Right Way

Watering your lawn the right way can be complicated. You don’t want to wait until your grass is dry to start watering. You should water your lawn once or twice a week.

Make sure you water it deeply, so keep the water running for a long time. This allows the water to get to the roots, where the grass needs it.

It would be best if you also watered in the morning before the sunlight peaks. If you water when it’s hot, the water will evaporate. Avoid watering at night because it can increase the chances of lawn disease.

4. Aerate Your Lawn

Have you ever aerated your lawn? If you said no, you are missing a big step to a beautiful lawn. Aeration pulls out small soil plugs throughout the lawn.

When you aerate, you let moisture, air, and nutrients reach the roots of the grass. Make sure you do this process with moist soil. It would be best if you also did this in the fall or spring.

You only need to do this once a year, so you don’t damage your landscape.

5. Add Seed

After you aerate, it’s a great time to seed. This will help fill in any bald patches in your lawn.

Make sure you use a seed mix that works for your climate and matches the grass you already have.

Follow These Lawn Care Basics

If you are ready for a green beautiful lawn, follow these lawn care basics. Make sure you cut your grass at the right length and give your yard plenty of sunlight, water, and fertilizer.

About Me

Hi! I'm Annie and I have 3 kids (all in their teens - yikes!). My mommy blog isn't all about lunches and DIY - it's also about humour. Like how my kids make fun of my texts as if I don't know how to use emojis (I DO!). Now that I have a bit more time - since my kids don't want to hang out with me (teenagers), I have taken up blogging.
