5 Types of Baby Clothes Every Parent Must Have

May 7, 2020 by Annie

Seeking out the perfect clothes for your precious bundle of joy is so much fun. And, the fact that you have so many options nowadays when it comes to buying  clothes for newborn babies
, simply adds to the excitement. Not only are the modern baby clothes super cutesy, but also soft and comfortable. This sure puts the parents in quite a dilemma about the clothes that they should get for the baby.

So, here’s offering you the suggestions that will get you out of your dilemma. While you can fill your baby’s wardrobe with as many clothes as you want, these five types of newborn baby clothes are an absolute must-have.

1. Bodysuits

Getting bodysuits for babies is so obvious that parents might just end up forgetting to buy some while shopping for newborn baby clothes. You will get hundreds of prints and styles, but do not get overwhelmed by all that. Just get something simple and comfy. Make sure to get it in a size for three to six months, because after a few weeks, your baby will probably not fit into the ones that are meant for three months.

2. T-shirts and pyjamas

The t-shirts and pyjamas are other clothing essentials for your newborn. Your precious little ones will sleep for at least sixteen hours each day, and it is important to keep them comfortable as they do that. Your choice of t-shirts and pyjamas as newborn baby clothes depends on the season you’re shopping in. Opt for heavier materials during the winters, and something lighter for the summer.

3. Dungarees

Figuring out the right outerwear to get for your baby is not the easiest of things. However, you cannot go wrong with dungarees as your choice of newborn baby clothes for taking them outside. It gives just the right amount of layering without making the baby uncomfortable and irritated. In fact, dungarees are the perfect blend of style and ease for the youngest fashionista in the house!

4. Socks and beanie

Do not forget to stock up on a few pairs of socks and beanies when you are shopping for newborn baby clothes. After all, keeping those heads protected and those little feet warm is equally important. Cotton should be your material of choice when buying baby socks or beanies because it is a natural product that does not irritate their delicate skin. The beanies and socks can be bought separately, but these also come in baby clothing sets.

5. Sweaters and Mittens

You will need to buy sweaters and infant winter mittens immediately if yours is a winter baby, but otherwise, you can hold off buying it for a few more months. Make sure that you buy something with a softer fabric that does not feel itchy on their skin. And, do not go for sweaters that are too heavy because even that would make them uncomfortable.

So, there you have it! The basics of buying baby clothes have been outlined in detail for you. It is time to start shopping for your precious little one.

Start Your New Family in Style: How to Decorate Your First House

May 28, 2019 by Annie

You’re buying your first home and have been scouring the web looking for inspiration on how to decorate your house. Look no further, we are here to help!

How to Decorate Your House

Step 1: Determine a Theme

It doesn’t have to be set in stone, but a color scheme or general idea of what you like is always best to know ahead of time.

If you love rustic, used items, make sure you know that, so you can have an idea on where to thrift items, and where to buy new.

Step 2: Wants vs. Needs

What items do you need? What items do you have a desire for?

Sometimes it’s best to write down the necessities first, and if you have leftover spending money you can splurge on the wanted things!

If you’re just dying to have that fancy chandelier, why not see about up-cycling one instead? It’ll be cheaper on your pocket, and more fun!

Step 3: Less is More

We’re not saying to have a bare living room with only one couch and one table. No! We’re saying to be picky about what you bring into your home.

You don’t need three console tables, so pick your favorite and sell the rest. You can use the money you make on that, to splurge on a few special things like scented candles or a fancy rug!

Now that we have a few ground rules on how to decorate, let’s do a deep dive!

Go Big or Go Home

Okay, maybe we’re terrible at puns!

But seriously, start with the big items first, then get the smaller, decorative items. We love these tulip table and chair sets from littletulip.com! Grab one of these sets first, then match your home decor to it.

Make sure you take measurements of the space before you make your order though! There’s nothing worse than falling in love with an item, having it shipped to your beautiful new home, and it not fitting in the space as you had hoped. Fight the guesstimating feeling and use a tape measure, trust us!

Don’t Be Afraid to DIY

We love a good Do It Yourself project! Look back at a previous post to see a few of our suggestions on what to DIY in decorating your new home.

While we do suggest DIYing to save money, be mindful of the project you’re taking on. Sometimes what seems to be easy, will turn out to be a huge undertaking that requires several steps and time devoted strictly to the project itself. You got this, just keep in mind a feasible outcome!

Wrapping Up

To wrap this baby up, decorating your new home may seem like a daunting task to some. We have full confidence in you that with the right mindset, and these tips, you can be an expert on how to decorate your house. You got this!

After you get all settled in, why not check out a few organizational tips? We’ve got that covered for you as well! Here are some easy ways to keep that beautiful new home neat and organized.

Protect Your Little One: 5 Vital Infant Car Seat Safety Tips for New Parents

May 17, 2019 by Annie

Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of the most exciting and joyful times in a parents life. However, it can also be very overwhelming. You’ve suddenly got this tiny human who is totally dependent on you.

It’s your job to keep this little bundle of joy safe and that can be quite a daunting task. Among one of the main aspects of looking after your baby properly is infant car seat safety. In fact, it’s one of the very first tasks you’ll undertake- securing your baby in a car seat for the drive home from the hospital.

So, here are some important tips on car seat safety for new parents.

Rear Facing Car Seat

When you’re getting out of the house with a child under the age of two in a car, the seat used should be a rear-facing child safety seat. Babies are still developing their spines and their heads tend to be the weightiest part of their body. If a baby is put in a front facing seat and has an accident, the injuries sustained could be a lot worse than if the baby was in a rear-facing seat.

Many parents make the mistake of switching their young children to front-facing seats when their feet start to touch the back of the car. If your baby’s knees are bent or they look like they haven’t got much room, it won’t harm your baby if there’s an accident. Keep your baby safe by sticking to a rear-facing seat for as long as possible.

Always Put Children in the Back Seat

It may be tempting to put your baby in the front seat so you can keep a closer eye while driving but if an accident happens, your baby will be in much greater danger. A baby in the front seat could suffer fatal injuries if the airbag is set off during a crash.

Some parents choose to disable the airbag but that leaves anyone else who travels in the front seat at risk when involved in an accident. If you find it difficult to get your child in and out of seats in the back, browse this page for the latest swivel seats and make life a bit easier for yourself.

Be Mindful of Clothes

During bouts of cold weather, it’s only natural to dress your child in warm clothing. Did you know that big coats and blankets can get in the way of harnesses working properly during a crash? When you put your child in a car seat, don’t put a blanket underneath him or wrap a blanket around him before putting the harness on.

Take thick coats off before putting your child in a car seat and wrap a blanket over your child and the harness. The closer the harness is to your child, the safer he will be.

The Do’s and Dont’s of Infant Car Seat Safety

There are so many do’s and don’ts of infant car seat safety that it’s hard to keep up with but if you need a few more tips on becoming a new parent, visit When Parent Texts.

Four Must-Do Tips For Baby-Proofing Your Home

March 13, 2018 by Annie

Welcoming a new baby into your home is exciting, but it can be stressful too. Especially when you realize just how much there is to do before your little bundle of joy starts crawling!

The house is a surprisingly dangerous place for little hands. Things that you may not think twice about, like getting into the cabinet under the sink, can be extremely dangerous for a young child. That’s why it’s so important that you get started baby proofing your home with these four tips.

Make the Blinds Safe

One of the easiest things to forget about baby proofing in your home is the blinds, but they are one of the most important things for you to pay attention to. Injury due to strangulation from the cords on blinds is a lot more common than you think.

Tie up all of the cords, far out of reach of your little one. It’s even better if you purchase new blinds. That’s because new blinds come with child safety features that will eliminate the possibility of accidents completely. You can even find blinds that don’t have cords at all, which are easier to operate, and they’ll provide you with peace of mind.

Cover Those Outlets

We all love to hate outlets. They connect us with a constant supply of electricity that allows us to power all of our devices, but those cords are ugly, and they can be extremely unsafe for your child.

Plug any outlets that aren’t in use, but you also have to make outlets inaccessible so your little one can’t yank the cords out from the wall either. Strategically place furniture in front of outlets and purchase plastic covers to put over the outlets to keep your kid from pulling them out of the wall.

Immovable Cabinet Doors

You can bet that your little one will want to get into anything and everything they can reach. That means you’ve got a lot of cabinet doors and drawers to worry about, especially in the kitchen!

A few ideas for those cabinets and drawers include:

  • Installing magnetic locks on the drawers
  • Use fasteners to keep cabinet doors shut
  • Removing unsafe items from lower cabinets, just in case

Just remember that there are cabinets in other rooms besides the kitchen! Secure cabinets and drawers in the bathroom and on freestanding furniture in the living room and bedrooms too. This doesn’t require any drastic renovations and changes, just a few easy modifications in order to keep your child safe.

Safeguard the Stairs

The stairs are especially dangerous to young children. They are extremely easy to tumble down, which is why it’s important that you install a gate on any level where your child will be without supervision. If they will be playing upstairs and downstairs, you should install a gate at the top and the bottom of the stairs.

This list only scratches the surface, but it’s a good place to get started. Master the four tips on this list and you can rest a little easier at night knowing your baby is safe from some of the most common household dangers.

Vital Help During a Pandemic: Stories from BCFS Health and Human Services in Corpus Christi

April 1, 2021 by Annie

BCFS Health and Human Services is a nonprofit organization committed to helping people. It helps adults with disabilities, youth from foster care, low-income parents, families in crisis, minors separated from their families, orphaned children, foster or adoptive families, victims of domestic violence, homeless youth, expectant mothers, and others facing hardship. The organization’s services help people through the challenges of the pandemic, which include economic hardship, health problems, and increased family tensions. In Corpus Christi, Texas, residents rely on the organization’s local office to serve as a lifeline during turbulent times.

The local office is run by Director Robin Soto. She manages a team who together help community members to find new jobs, overcome financial hardship, support their families, and overcome mental health issues. Her approach is to reach out to families and individuals with a personal approach that tackles every issue with enthusiasm and experience. The office’s efforts include career planning, parenting advice and strategies, and other services that improve people’s outlooks and economic prospects. The pandemic poses unique challenges to the Corpus Christi office because it required it to develop virtual content and service delivery in keeping with social distancing’s rules.

The efforts of the amazing team in Corpus Christ produced multiple successful outcomes. The organization helped a young mom named Lena* to overcome the loss of her school district job. Lena balanced looking for a new job (with BCFS’s assistance and strategies) along with raising a small child and preparing for a new baby. She accepted the office’s offer of one month’s rent payment along with job search resources. Through a local partner organization, she also received a new crib and other items to welcome the new baby.

Another Corpus Christi mother of four was struggling with her kids’ behavioral problems which became more acute during quarantine. To help with coping mechanisms and other strategies, this mom took BCFS’s parenting classes that are offered by experts in child development. These courses gave her insights into why kids “act out” and tactics for defusing tense situations and reducing the amount of anger in the household.

3 Tips For Handling Rebellious Teens

April 1, 2024 by Annie

As a parent, we often think that the hardest part of parenting is the first few months of a baby’s life. The diaper changing, the feedings, and of course the night wakings. However, this is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to parenting! It can be a rude awakening for parents to reach the teenage years only to find their bubbly and obedient baby is now are rebellious teenager.

In some cases, the rebelliousness is as simple as speaking disrespectfully, or maybe occasionally refusing to make their bed. However, in more extreme cases, the rebelliousness may call for involving the police.

The good news is that in most cases, this rebelliousness eventually comes to an end, and is seen by psychologists as a natural and normal part of our evolution as humans. With a little patience and understanding, you can make it through these teenage years and maintain a healthy relationship with your child well into their adult years.

If you’re a parent struggling to survive this rebellious time in your child’s life, here are some of the best tips for navigating the teen years.

Encourage Communication

The first thing you should focus on is keeping the lines of communication open between you and your child. Even though you might not necessarily like what the other house to say, both of you need to stay on the same page when it comes to what your expectations are, and what you’re frustrated about. Allow your teen to express their thoughts and feelings, and instead of automatically shutting them down (even if they seem totally unreasonable) guide them towards why that sort of mentality is unacceptable. Avoid long lectures, and particularly criticizing, and instead encourage dialogue with an open mind.

Set Boundaries

Having an open mind with your teen doesn’t necessarily mean you don’t have boundaries. Make sure that you set clear boundaries so that your team knows you won’t stand for disrespect, or disobeying certain rules. These boundaries will help you maintain consistency with your expectations, and also give your child a sense of security.

While you may be under the impression that boundaries irritate teenagers, the truth is that they provide a sense of security and responsibility. Kids want rules at the end of the day. This is because rules help them anticipate what happens next.

Consider Professional Help

Sometimes a child’s rebelliousness is so intense that you can’t take on yourself. While this may make you feel frustrated, or possibly even helpless, there’s nothing wrong with turning to a professional psychologist who can help you navigate your child’s behavior. A professional counselor can help you address underlying issues that may be causing their repetitive rebellious behavior, and help draw a bridge between you the parent, and your child. Remember—this rebellious stage is perfectly natural, and you can make it through with patience and understanding.

Lead Paint Disclosure on Rental Properties

December 4, 2023 by Annie

There are limitations to how carefully a prospective renter can inspect a potential new rental apartment. Most rental property tours only scrape the surface of what the eye can see.

Prospective renters are unable to verify the paint for lead or the insulation in the apartment for asbestos. Thankfully, other sources of accurate disclosure are available to tenants and renters besides the landlord or property owner. To provide a safe living environment, landlords must ensure that they are aware of their legal responsibilities regarding lead paint disclosure. When you sign a rental contract with your tenants, you must hold up your end of the deal. If not, depending on the circumstances, your renter can legally sue you.

Landlords and property managers are required by federal, state, and local laws to disclose any defects that could endanger human life or cause injury. The federal lead paint disclosure is among the more well-known ones. Continue reading below as this post discusses lead paint disclosure on rental properties and other valuable information.

How to Provide Lead Paint Disclosures to Tenants

Giving tenants lead paint disclosures requires a systematic and honest approach. To begin, include a lead paint disclosure clause in the leasing agreement. Indicate the presence of lead-based paint on the property and any known dangers. Additionally, as required by federal law, provide tenants with an instructional leaflet on lead hazards.

Allow tenants to perform a lead paint examination before signing the lease, allowing them to make informed decisions regarding potential hazards. Keep detailed records of all disclosures and communications to create a paper trail for legal compliance. Bay Property Management Group Northern Virginia suggests complying with all legal disclosures to avoid a potential lawsuit.

Provide tenants with the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) “Protect Your Family from Lead in Your Home” leaflet for pre-1978 residences. Ensure that the paperwork is provided and tenants are given plenty of time to review and request clarification if necessary.

Remember that open communication is essential. Encourage tenants to raise questions and address problems, building a trusting and transparent relationship. Landlords can fulfill their legal requirements while prioritizing the safety and well-being of their renters by meticulously following these measures.

Potential Health Risks of Lead Exposure

Neurological Effect

Lead exposure poses serious neurological problems, particularly in children. Elevated lead levels can have long-term impacts on the developing neurological system, causing cognitive impairment, learning impairments, and behavioral disorders.

The impact on IQ and developmental milestones can be very severe. Even low levels of lead exposure can contribute to these neurological effects, emphasizing the crucial need for preventing and resolving lead exposure, particularly in environments where children are present. Early detection and care are critical for mitigating the potentially irreversible effects on neurological health.

Anemia

Exposure to lead can cause anemia by impairing the body’s ability to generate hemoglobin, which is essential for carrying oxygen throughout the body. Due to this interference, erythrocyte production is hindered, which results in inadequate oxygen delivery, fatigue, weakness, and pallor. Breathlessness and an elevated heart rate are common symptoms of anemia, as the body tries to make up for low oxygen levels.

Lead-induced anemia is especially harmful to children because it restricts healthy growth and development. Quick action is required to stop more problems from getting worse, which means that raising awareness and taking preventative measures are essential to protecting people, especially the vulnerable ones, from the crippling effects of lead exposure.

Kidney Damage

Lead poisoning is a serious threat to kidney health. Lead toxicity can damage kidney function, reducing their ability to filter and eliminate waste from the bloodstream. Prolonged exposure may contribute to chronic kidney disease and damage renal function overall. The role of the kidneys in maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance is jeopardized, potentially leading to hypertension and fluid retention.

Individuals with pre-existing renal diseases are especially vulnerable. Mitigating lead exposure is critical to protecting renal health, highlighting the necessity of preventative measures and prompt intervention to lower the risk of kidney impairment associated with higher lead levels.

Gastrointestinal Issues

Exposure to lead can cause gastrointestinal problems such as stomach pain, constipation, or diarrhea. When consumed, lead can build up in the digestive tract, causing discomfort and interrupting regular bowel movement. Gastrointestinal symptoms are especially disturbing since they can contribute to malnutrition and dehydration, increasing the health effects of lead exposure.

Minimizing contact with lead-contaminated substances and implementing preventive measures are critical to mitigating these gastrointestinal effects, emphasizing the importance of public health initiatives and stringent regulatory measures to protect individuals, particularly children, from the harmful effects of lead exposure.

Cardiovascular Problems

Lead exposure poses serious cardiovascular threats. Elevated blood lead levels have been related to an increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Lead toxicity causes arterial stiffness and interferes with normal cardiovascular function, potentially leading to strokes and heart attacks.

Lead-induced oxidative stress and inflammation are involved in the mechanisms that have a negative impact on blood vessel health. This increased cardiovascular risk emphasizes the necessity of reducing lead exposure, especially for persons who have environmental exposure, in order to protect heart health and prevent the development of cardiovascular problems.

Conclusion

The importance of lead paint disclosure in rental units is evident in terms of protecting public health. We reduce dangers associated with lead exposure by promoting open communication between landlords and tenants, particularly among vulnerable populations such as children.

These transparency measures, which strike a compromise between property management and tenant well-being, are an important step towards building healthier living situations. With regulatory structures in place, recognizing and eliminating the presence of lead paint becomes a legal obligation as well as a moral responsibility, emphasizing the commitment to promoting safe and habitable rental spaces for all.
