Fall is here and the colder weather has crept in, meaning our summer wardrobes are out! It’s time to get cozy again, and that means updating your kids wardrobes for the months ahead, so that they’re properly kitted out and ready for the weather. Clear out anything that no longer fits and isn’t suitable for autumn and winter, and make a start on adding these essentials!
Outerwear
First things first, coats! For babies and toddlers, snowsuits (full onesie style coats) or thinner ‘pramsuits’ are perfect for taking them out and about when it’s cold outside. Just remember, these kinds of coats should never be worn in a car seat. For older kids, switch out the summer jackets and go with something thick and cosy with warm lining and a waterproof coating. Something with a hood is always useful too.
Footwear
As the temperature drops, it’s important to keep your kids’ feet warm and dry. For outdoor adventures, invest in sturdy boots that are both waterproof and insulated. Wellies with a warm lining are great for rainy days, and as the name suggests, snow boots are perfect for colder and snowy conditions. Make sure the boots are easy for your little ones to put on and take off themselves, especially if they’re heading to school or daycare. For everyday wear, a good pair of trainers or high tops with warm insoles can help them stay comfortable during cooler days.
Pajamas
Depending on how cold your house gets overnight, buying some thicker, cozy pjs could be a must. Look for long sleeved pajama sets made from flannel or cotton with brushed lining. For the littlest ones, onesies or sleepsuits with feet are ideal, keeping them snug from head to toe. Thermal pajamas are also a great option, especially if your home tends to be a bit chillier at night. If you home tend to stay quite warm, simple cotton or soft jersey pajamas might work well, you can find lots of fun kids’ pajamas too in their favourite characters. As long as they have long sleeves and full length trousers, they should be fine in their warm beds. Don’t forget a dressing gown and a pair of warm slippers to keep your kids toasty during early mornings and bedtime routines too.
Socks and Underwear
It’s easy to overlook the basics, but stocking up on thicker socks and warm underwear is essential. Opt for wool or thermal socks to keep little toes warm, especially if your kids are going to be playing outside. Having enough fresh pairs on hand means fewer laundry emergencies! As for underwear, a fresh batch of basics is always a good idea, especially as kids tend to outgrow them quickly. For extra chilly days, thermal vests and undershirts can make a big difference in keeping them warm underneath their layers.
Outfits
Layering is key when it comes to autumn and winter outfits for kids. Start with basics like long-sleeved tops, thermal shirts, and cozy sweaters. Fleece lined leggings or joggers are perfect for both boys and girls and offer warmth without restricting movement. From there you can add a jacket or coat, plus scarf, hat and gloves if needed and depending what you’re getting up to that day. Kids fashion is fun, but practicality is the most important thing!
