There’s no denying the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic has took a toll on our social lives and trapped us in our homes. With high stress levels, more than 10% of Americans have resorted to cannabis to take proper care of themselves. They have at least consumed cannabis once since March 2020, when the pandemic was declared as a national emergency.
However, though the rise in consumption holds true amongst all demographics, there is one particular group that stands out. A higher percentage of moms are turning to cannabis at around double the rate of all other age groups. With the rapid legalization of medical and recreational cannabis in most states, an increasingly large number of moms are choosing cannabis over alcohol. Moreover, as there are numerous studies that proved that cannabis is less toxic than alcohol, health-conscious moms are consuming cannabis to deal with the stress of parenting.
Are you a marijuana mom?
Have you already heard the term ‘marijuana mom’ or are you one? Well, a marijuana mom is a mother who has started including cannabis into her regular life as a parent. This kind of huge acceptance among moms has helped in fading the stigma associated with the use of cannabis among medical users and adults, in general.
Recreational cannabis use has become legal in more than 10 states in the US, and it has also been decriminalized in 27 states. At present, there are just 8 states where the use of cannabis is still illegal. Hence, it is never a surprising fact that Gen Z and millennials are using cannabis more than before. Therefore, marijuana moms have started taking over this population.
Parenting and Medical use of cannabis
Besides being used for recreational reasons by parents, it is also seen that cannabis has successfully reduced the various post-partum conditions and symptoms. Pain associated with delivery, postpartum depression, anxiety, and different other conditions is seen to have been reduced by the medical use of cannabis products.
PPD or Postpartum Depression is a collection of several symptoms that start occurring soon after the delivery of your child. These symptoms include insomnia, depression, irritability, and mood swings. As per health professionals and doctors, mothers usually experience these symptoms due to their changed hormone levels and the stress of parenthood. Cannabis has been successful in treating these aforementioned symptoms.
Should you consume cannabis when you’re pregnant?
If you’re a marijuana mom, you shouldn’t confuse yourself with an expecting mom who is consuming cannabis. The question of whether expecting moms should use cannabis has still been a topic of debate but the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention warns that moms who use cannabis during pregnancy may negatively affect the development of the baby:
- Developmental issues
- Low birth weight
- Learning disabilities
It is proven that using cannabis after delivery is harmless but doing the same when you’re pregnant can lead to possible health challenges for your baby. In order to get a more authoritative answer, there is more research needed but you should dwell on the safer side when it’s your unborn baby at stake.
Effects of CBD use among parents
As per a report by the WHO (World Health Organization) in 2017, there is no negative link between CBD use and your health but there is a dearth of data with regards to the impact of CBD while breastfeeding. There are multiple CBD products in the market and they vary in potency and quality. In case you’re using CBD to ward off postpartum symptoms, make sure you use premium quality CBD which is legitimate.
Know the source of your CBD, the details of the ingredients in your products, the method of extraction, and get it tested by a verified third-party before getting the best CBD experience.
